That is all.

Want:

To ride up through the circles of Minas Tirith.

The tent Aragorn gets waked up in at Dunharrow.

Got:

Shadowfax.

Sigh.

Except you know what? Years ago on the SFF-F newsgroup, you posted all about the horses that, iirc, might have been native to a Celtic region such as Middle Earth at the time, and you wrote about the ponies that were native to the Isles, and how they were strong, sturdy mounts, but not the sort of horse one thinks of when one thinks of war steeds. Rather small, in fact, so that they would not have the overall visual effect that a line of Shadowfax-like horses would have. So that when Theoden gave the order to charge, it would go something like,

"Forth, Aer Lingus!"
::pittypittypitty::

So now, every time I hear Theoden shout , "Forth, Aer Lingus!", a little voice in the back of my head whispers "Pittypittypitty."

I blame you for this.

O_o I was talking about the movie "The Vikings," which was filmed in Iceland, using Icelandics. No reference whatever to LOTR. But very very funny to watch.

Anglo-Saxons had more or less normal-sized horses. Though mostly their thing was boats. (Sam Gamgee would not approve.)

Yah--I thought my memory was faulty. It's been years. All I remembered was the dialogue.

I still blame you.

We are happy to take blame for that level of Evil.

I will also add that I am impressed that you recall that post. It's been years.

That film scarred me for life. Pittypittypitty!

Why am I finding it ever-so-hard to have pity for you here? :-)

(Which isn't to say raising Shadowfax doesn't have its challenges ...)

Warped for life.

Because I weep during that battle. "I am no man!"

Back of my mind, rattling around like a broken part. ::pittypittypitty::

Scars.

My favorite line in the book and movies. Because he sets it up so beautifully to think it will be Merry. But it's not.

I just like Eowyn a lot. My favorite character after Sam. Maybe they're neck and neck now.

I need to get the Director's cut to see if there are scenes with her and Faramir, because they just hint at a relationship and if anyone deserved a nice, long falling in love scene, it was Eowyn.

Yes, get the extended versions. They are so much richer and stronger. Make more sense, too.

And yes, Eowyn and Faramir get more screen time.

No long falling in love scene, unfortunately. The extended version does about what was done in the book. Though I strongly advise watching the extended versions. Much better.

Eowyn and Sam are my two favorites as well.

Dayum. Now you make me want to write "Raising Shadowfax" a la "Raising Arizona."

I have held two of the swords--Theoden's and Aragorn's. It was all I could do to handle them politely and not release the Inner Crazy Woman with Sword.

But I want to come out onto the plains of Rohan, and have those clothes...though I also want Boromir's doublet...and a sword with better steel than any of mine except the one as well as better skill than I have. And a horse, of course, that is a)sound, and b)sane, and a body that has forgotten all the old injuries and still works right, which this one increasingly does not.

Minas Tirith...not so much. I belong in the field and forest.

I want to ride up the circles of the city. I'd live in Edoras. And visit Rivendell frequently.

The horse wouldn't like living in a city. He'd love Rohan. Charm all the mares and get all the girls braiding flowers in his mane.

I'm sorry your horse is having problems. :( My geriatrics are hanging in; they like being ridin' hosses now they've given at the broodmare office.

I'm having more problems than the horses, alas. However, they're in general good health, they're pretty, they keep each other company, and I should outlive them, which is good as it means no one else will have to worry about what to do with them. They get fed, trimmed, vet care at least twice a year for shots and teeth, and room to amble around looking for another way to get dirty, so they can look at me reproachfully and say "Once I was a handsome, shiny-coated fellow with a silken mane and tail, and look what you've let me become." To which I say, "If you didn't roll the moment it rains, you might not look like a long-legged Rastafarian hog. Now hold still while I get the mud-beads out of your dreads..."

Illusion, who has the full tail, is talented at biting off osage orange branches (with thorns) and then dropping them on the ground, and then deciding to roll nearby so the thorny branch gets caught in his tail. Mac hasn't figured that one out yet, but he's the thin-soled tenderfoot who goes lame at the slightest excuse (I think the sight of a saddle, but also on soft ground). Mac's the drama queen, too.

But they'd both love Rohan. Illusion would find some toxic plant and eat it and have to be nursed back to health (been there, done that) and Mac would go lame regularly and dramatically, but they'd love it. No fences.

If I still had Ky, I'd want to ride up the circles of the city...but not either of these guys. First, though, Something would have to change with the hip.

In Middle-Earth, hips cooperate. Or else.

My lot need humans to worship them and be partners with them. Which is why I wonder if Tolkien knew about Vienna. All those white horses, and Shadowfax. Long-lived, waits for his one true person, understands the speech of Men...yep.
