The Boston Globe reviewer gave it 4 stars.

I don't think I've seen a Star Trek film since the one with the whales, which made me want to throw a shoe at the screen. But this one sounds good...

About two-thirds of the way into the ridiculously satisfying new "Star Trek" movie, opening Thursday, there comes a brief shot of the crew on the bridge of the Federation Starship Enterprise. The film has been picking up familiar names as it goes, but you suddenly realize with a jolt that everyone, at last, is here: young, hopeful versions of Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and Mr. Spock (Zachary Quinto), communications officer Uhura (Zoe Saldana) and pilot Sulu (John Cho), Bones (Karl Urban) and Chekhov (Anton Yelchin) and Scotty (Simon Pegg). It's a throwaway image, yet you feel the final pieces of the puzzle snap into place with a witty and intensely fond reverence. I just about wept with joy, and I'm not even a Trekkie.

I liked (the even-numbered) Trek films, and am convinced that they have used some sort of far-future science in the trailers for the new film, because the trailers appear to be directly hard-wired to my tear ducts. I've been getting sniffly over them since the very first one with the Enterprise in spacedock, and if this continues I expect to spend the entire film in a happy, snivelling mess. :)

So Kirk started out a captain, and maybe 10 or so years later, he was still a captain?

Does Captain cover several ranks? Or did Kirk's behavior lead to him getting busted/passed over a lot?

he certainly got busted down from Admiral repeated times (at least once on purpose, because what he really loves is being a captain), so it's entirely likely he got busted down to or from captain a few times.

I actually want to see this one, and up until now, I had only a vague sense that it was Out There. Somewhere.

I watched only the Original Series on TV. Never even glanced at the spin-offs. Maybe that was a mistake, but I was just never interested.

Loved Wrath of Khan.

That's an interesting take, and I'm looking forward to seeing the update, if only to contrast it against the decidedly 60s-70s sensibility found in the originals.

Some things just fit, they're just right.

Sounds as though they updated here and there, according to the review.

I skipped the last couple of movies and was thinking of giving this one a pass, especially since from the movie posters and previews the boys are all so desperately pretty it looked like BoyBands do Star Trek. But I'm hearing decent things about it, and [livejournal.com profile] jpsorrow is dying to go, so I'll probably wind up seeing it with him.

I see nothing wrong with a screenful of desperately pretty boys. But then, I'm shallow.

Well that is the sole reason I went to see Wolverine this past weekend.

I dunno. They always talk about updating, but that always seems to mean leaving in predominantly white male characters (because to mess with that would alter canon while they can do whatever else they want to "canon" as long as it doesn't change the predominance of white male characters).

Because, you know, I think it is so funny that they have blithely substituted a Korean American actor for a Japanese American one (and I love John Cho, so it's not about him personally) as if *there is no difference* but if they were to, say, reboot by making McCoy mixed race or something *that would be too much*.

Argh. I am frustrated with Hollywood right now as they seem to have regressed on these issues.

However - HAVING SAID ALL THAT - I'll prolly see it anyway. *g*
