The Boston Globe reviewer gave it 4 stars.

I don't think I've seen a Star Trek film since the one with the whales, which made me want to throw a shoe at the screen. But this one sounds good...

About two-thirds of the way into the ridiculously satisfying new "Star Trek" movie, opening Thursday, there comes a brief shot of the crew on the bridge of the Federation Starship Enterprise. The film has been picking up familiar names as it goes, but you suddenly realize with a jolt that everyone, at last, is here: young, hopeful versions of Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and Mr. Spock (Zachary Quinto), communications officer Uhura (Zoe Saldana) and pilot Sulu (John Cho), Bones (Karl Urban) and Chekhov (Anton Yelchin) and Scotty (Simon Pegg). It's a throwaway image, yet you feel the final pieces of the puzzle snap into place with a witty and intensely fond reverence. I just about wept with joy, and I'm not even a Trekkie.

I liked (the even-numbered) Trek films, and am convinced that they have used some sort of far-future science in the trailers for the new film, because the trailers appear to be directly hard-wired to my tear ducts. I've been getting sniffly over them since the very first one with the Enterprise in spacedock, and if this continues I expect to spend the entire film in a happy, snivelling mess. :)

So Kirk started out a captain, and maybe 10 or so years later, he was still a captain?

Does Captain cover several ranks? Or did Kirk's behavior lead to him getting busted/passed over a lot?

he certainly got busted down from Admiral repeated times (at least once on purpose, because what he really loves is being a captain), so it's entirely likely he got busted down to or from captain a few times.

I actually want to see this one, and up until now, I had only a vague sense that it was Out There. Somewhere.

I watched only the Original Series on TV. Never even glanced at the spin-offs. Maybe that was a mistake, but I was just never interested.

Loved Wrath of Khan.
