The Boston Globe reviewer gave it 4 stars.

I don't think I've seen a Star Trek film since the one with the whales, which made me want to throw a shoe at the screen. But this one sounds good...

About two-thirds of the way into the ridiculously satisfying new "Star Trek" movie, opening Thursday, there comes a brief shot of the crew on the bridge of the Federation Starship Enterprise. The film has been picking up familiar names as it goes, but you suddenly realize with a jolt that everyone, at last, is here: young, hopeful versions of Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and Mr. Spock (Zachary Quinto), communications officer Uhura (Zoe Saldana) and pilot Sulu (John Cho), Bones (Karl Urban) and Chekhov (Anton Yelchin) and Scotty (Simon Pegg). It's a throwaway image, yet you feel the final pieces of the puzzle snap into place with a witty and intensely fond reverence. I just about wept with joy, and I'm not even a Trekkie.

I dunno. They always talk about updating, but that always seems to mean leaving in predominantly white male characters (because to mess with that would alter canon while they can do whatever else they want to "canon" as long as it doesn't change the predominance of white male characters).

Because, you know, I think it is so funny that they have blithely substituted a Korean American actor for a Japanese American one (and I love John Cho, so it's not about him personally) as if *there is no difference* but if they were to, say, reboot by making McCoy mixed race or something *that would be too much*.

Argh. I am frustrated with Hollywood right now as they seem to have regressed on these issues.

However - HAVING SAID ALL THAT - I'll prolly see it anyway. *g*
