That pre-formed, scallop-edged bacon product that the cafeteria started using because the slices don't crumble like the real stuff, which made it difficult to charge by the slice?

Doesn't taste like bacon.

It tastes like bacon if you removed the bacon. Bacon ghosts. Distant bacon memories.

One thing is doesn't taste like? Bacon.

At one time, back in the late 60s early 70s when I was stationed in D.C., there was a product available at Appalachian Outfitters in Oakton, VA that was compressed bacon crumbles vacuum packed in foil. It was called, predictably "bacon bar" and there was a "roast beef bar" (not as good, but as sustaining.) I was skinny as a rail, and went hiking most weekends in the mountains, and found "bacon bar" to be wonderful stuff...it tasted like bacon (the meat bar didn't taste nearly as much like roast beef--it was too dry.)

I suspect the cafeteria is using a fake bacon product, soy with a touch of bacon flavor, on the grounds that economy can also serve health. Not.

Either that, or some type of microwaveable bacon that consists of the real stuff mixed with binder. It has some bacon-y flavor, but it very washed out, and the contrast between the fat and meat isn't there. You'd never in a million years confuse it for a thick slice of apple wood-smoked bacon.

Yah, there is no substitute for bacon. Why do people not realize this? Who are all these asylum escapees who buy Bac-os and similar products?

And unless one's health requirements are extreme, I don't see the reason to substitute.

Sounds to me like what an overacting Bassett hound might ID as Beggin' Strips for Apes Ugh.
