Thursday

As you can see, I've changed my LJ scheme again. If my hair were long enough, I'd get it cut. Maybe I'll color it, just to get that change thing going.

Much of the junk that was atop the desk is now on the floor. Tonight we will sort and shred and toss.

I'm thinking of signing up for a My Space page--do you folks who have one find it worth the extra work?

It's not my favorite site, but it's sold at least a few books for me, and it also let me get in touch with a handful of old friends from high school, which was a nice bonus.

I'm http://www.myspace.com/dsnight if you do decide to join :-)

I tried setting up an account, and wound up canceling it. The flashing banner ads drove me up the wall, and I couldn't get the profile page to look the way I wanted to--how do you separate lines/paragraphs in html?

Then I tried about 5 different user names, and couldn't get one to stick.

Maybe later...

<p> is code for a new paragraph, and will insert a double-space. Technically, you need to use a </p> at the end of it, but if you leave it off it generally won't hurt anything.

<br> gives you a single hard return.

I do know what you mean about the ads and other gizmos. Simon Haynes gave me a list of Firefox add-ons and settings that would filter most of that out, but I haven't tried 'em yet...

If you try the add-ons, and they work, please send them on. Because I would like to set up the page, but dang, those ads are ugly.

Also, how do you set up different backgrounds? [livejournal.com profile] difrancis set up her page to fit in with her website.

Thanks for reminding me, I need to log in there and clear out some messages and friend requests and whatnot.

I found myself ridiculously popular for about a week or two there, which amounted to probably over 4000 friend requests and 40K+ pageviews of my profile. After people started asking me for the published story that I mentioned in my profile, I put up a link to the PDF of Subterranean #4 (http://scalzi.com/subterranean_issue_4.pdf). Scalzi said about 400 download requests came through in those first two weeks, which accounted for around half of all downloads in that time frame.

So... interesting. If you think the banner ads are obnoxious, some people's profiles are downright traumatic. Like Jim, I've managed to link up with a couple of old classmates and even a Marine from my Boot Camp platoon. http://www.myspace.com/davidklecha (http://www.myspace.com/davidklecha) if you decide to stick with it.

Woops, I lied. http://www.myspace.com/daveklecha (http://www.myspace.com/daveklecha), not what I posted above.

Managing all these online identities... almost a full-time job in itself.

I will likely go back to it. I found some sites that offer code to hide personal info, and others that offer different background schemes. My goal is to build something that somewhat matches my website.

That's cool.

Definitely an interesting dynamic at work there, not at all the sort of thing I've found on LJ. Not bad, just different ;)

Except for some of the eye-searing themes. Those are just bad. Mine is just generic for now, until I get up the energy to go looking.
