…is always hell on wheels.

Started the day with 5 meetings on my calendar. I never have 5 meetings in one day. I’m not in the wall-to-wall-meetings bracket. But one turned into an email/phone call and another turned out to be pretty short, so it wasn’t too bad. I still have some day job things to do this evening, so not quite out of the woods yet. But I got through the end of the quarter and received a nice email of the sort one files away, so it was all good.

Laundry this evening–third load is in the washer. I have mentally packed, although the actual drag-up-the-suitcase-from-downstairs-and-fold-and-sort may be put off until tomorrow evening. Received the confirms that CPA e-filed taxes, so YEA!! Didn’t think I would get through that with time to spare.

It would have been nice to sleep in tomorrow morning, but I have a physical therapy session scheduled for 7am. I don’t think I ever mentioned that. Decided to find out whether strengthening my knees would help with occasional bouts of can’t-run-anymore. We’re in Week 3, and I think it’s helping. Jogged 20 minutes on Monday without pain. Keeping my fingers crossed that I can keep off the weight I’ve lost until the knees get straightened out or I give up and give ellipticals a try.

How can it be 730pm already?

A “Saskatchewan Screamer” whipped through Thursday night into Friday morning, leaving a couple inches of heart attack snow in its wake. Lots of folks got 6+ inches, but stuff around here fell as rain until well after midnight, so I guess I lucked out. Didn’t have to shovel it in the morning, and much of it had melted by the time I got home from the day job. Today, it’s temps in the 20s and some blue sky showing through the clouds. The spirea had started to bud and the daffs to push up through the ground–not sure what this winter rehash is going to do to them.

I may plant tomato seeds in starter trays this week. I want to keep the number of plants in the raised bed down to around four, so of course I bought 5 varieties of seeds: Arkansas Traveler, Black Cherry, 2 types of Heinz, and Sunset’s Red Horizon. Then the store tossed in a freebie pack of German Striped Stuffers, which despite sounding vaguely rude is actually a stripedy tomato made for stuffing. Not a fan of stuffed tomatoes, so I may give them a pass.

I don’t think I’ll plant mesclun this year. It always comes up, but it takes up a lot of room that I think I would rather give over to basil and other herbs. Gonna keep it simple. No peppers or garlic or anything else. Tomatoes and herbs.

I have not run in three weeks. Knees, this time, a sensation of tightness on the insides of both. The left is way worse than the right, and is actually still bugging me a bit. Fear of gaining back all the weight I lost drove me to the foot doctor, who ordered a different type of orthotic. Unfortunately, those are still about two weeks away, and in the meantime I’m afraid to do anything. I may try plain old walking next week, but it was the speed work that knocked the pounds off and I dare not try that until I get the new inserts.

My problems are two-fold, very high arches combined with right leg about 1/3″ shorter than the left. Can’t fix the height difference because the right ankle has compensated over the years and hurts like hell if it can’t underpronate to its heart’s content.

I never realized I had all these problems until I started to try to, you know, exercise and be healthy.

In actual book news, Modern Fae’s Guide hits the shelves the week after next, March 6, to be exact. Available for pre-order in all the usual places.

Speed work

Questions to runners who have added speed work to your workouts–how much do you do and how often? Do you run yourself to Chariots of Fire-level exhaustion? Do you mix it in with regular workouts, or do you do special speed work sessions?

I ask because I’m wondering if I do enough, or if it matters what I do as long as I do it. My typical workout is:

10 min warm-up
10 min jogging
5 minutes of 30 seconds run/30 seconds sprint (for me, a sprint is 6-7 mph, 8.5 – 10 minute mile pace)

After this, I alternate 4 minutes speedwalking/1 minute sprinting for about half an hour.

I mix running and walking in deference to my knees, which have been problematic in the past. Even so, I can feel the difference since I added the sprints to my workout. I’ve lost weight that just wasn’t budging before, my legs are getting nice and hard, and my endurance has definitely improved. But I’m kinda making things up as I go along, and I’m curious as to what other folks do.

Sitting outside despite the humidity and the lightest of sprinkles coming down. The rain kept the temp from ratcheting up, and I'm enjoying the coolness.

I can haz new treadmill. The installers were supposed to arrive between 4 and 8 in the pip emma, but they called me at work around 3 to tell me that they had arrived. So I jetted home and let the dogs out in the backyard while the guys came in the front. Took them about a half-hour to put the thing together. It's about the equivalent of the one that broke down--0-10mph, 0-10% incline. This one doesn't have a dashboard fan, but I don't expect I will miss it. It does have a jack for the iPod so I can listen without earbuds, which is nice. The sound isn't the best, but it's good enough.

I think the belt on the old machine must have been slipping for a while, and that maybe the calibration was off. I didn't hit the same speeds this evening, but I felt it more. Of course, the two-week break didn't help.

Between the new treadmill and all the junk haulage, a lot has been accomplished in the last week or so even though it doesn't really feel like it.

Garden-wise, the mini-roses are sporting a second round of buds. The full-size tomatoes are sporting handball-size greenies, and the Tommy Toe cherry is showing a lots of little'uns. The lilies have opened, lovely fuchsia and white blooms, and the hydrangeas are going strong. The Japanese beetles were munching on my hanging basket petunias while waiting for the hibiscus and Rose of Sharon buds to become interesting. I showed them--went all chemical on them and broke out the rose spray.

Waiting for the bats to come out. I love my little bats.

Supposed to heat up again this weekend. No major rain predicted, although that doesn't mean we won't get any. I intend to take a break from the house. I will cook--Ina Garten made wheatberry salad with veggies, and I want to try it. I may also make more hummus because it turned out really well. And cookies. I may make cookies. And write. And maybe vacuum before the dog hair takes over the house.

Grocery shopping this morning, followed by a trip to Sports Authority to look at treadmills. They had the model I picked out when I searched online, a lower-end folding model with automatic incline. I opted for delivery w/ installation, and should hopefully be on the jog again by the end of the week if not sooner.

Home. Made hummus for the first time, a simple version to which I added some red pepper flakes, mint, and parsley. It's garlicky as hell, but good. One more thing that I will make from scratch instead of buying at the store.

I need to do some day job stuff sometime today, but right now I'm kicking back and watching Prisoner of Azkaban. Dinner will be a turkey salad sandwich. We've gotten a break from the worst of the heat over the last couple of days because of the waves of t-storms that have moved through, but it's still muggy. Not a hot meal kind of day.

Busy weekend, overall. Productive, but yanno, I could use a few days off.

I was jogging on the treadmill, getting ready to kick up the speed, when the lights and TV went off and the treadmill stopped dead. My first thought was that the power had gone out, but before I had the chance to swear loud and long, I saw that the floor fan in the kitchen was still running.

Jogging/running/whichever continues. 3.25 miles/40 minutes both Wednesday and tonight, bracketed by warm-up, cool-down and 15 minutes of incline walking. 70 minutes total. The 40 minutes includes 25 minutes @ 5mph, which is the longest time I have ever been able to keep that pace. OK, it's poky, but six months ago my feet were so screwed up that I thought they were riddled with stress fractures and/or arthritis. Not only that, but they were knocking my entire body out of whack. I would catch myself walking with a starboard list, and I actually had to concentrate on straightening my spine. If I didn't pay attention, I would just tilt to the right again. Everything was buckling because my very high arches were not getting the needed support.

It isn't an exaggeration to say that these orthotics have changed my life. My feet are a little stiff in the morning, but nothing like what they were. I'm walking straight again. My knees ::knock wood:: get a little twingey, but that goes away. It's not soreness.

That being said, the middle 20 minutes of a run are like the middle of a book. Misery. Too far into the mire to turn back, but yet with so far to go. Sometimes the only thing that keeps me going is the prospect of a shower and dinner when I'm done. And yoga butt. The prospect of someday developing a yoga butt, in as much as I can at my age.

Since I started using my orthotics, I have felt a profound improvement in the state of the feet. Less stiffness. Much less pain. So, over the last few weeks, I've added jogging on the flat to the walking-up-inclines workout. Started with a mile. Up to a mile and a half now. A lousy 20-minute mile and a half, but still. I'll add a little distance and a little speed every week, and see how the knees do. Pre-orthotics, they let me down every time I tried to go farther than two miles or faster than 5 mph. But the way my arches were mashing down with each step could serve as an explanation for the knee issue, and the arches aren't mashing anymore.

Before I started, I wondered if I would still be able to manage a mile. Maybe walking kept me in better shape than I thought. Maybe jogging a mile is no big deal. Whatever. I'll keep at it, and see how it goes over the next few months. Just let the knees hold up.

Sometimes, when I'm sweating like a fiend and my mind is occupied with the task of putting one foot in front of the other, important turns of plot drop right into my lap. Or would drop in my lap, except I'm running, not sitting.

So I guess they drop on my head.

Really important turns of plot. Like the 'whole story leads up to This Moment' turns of plot.

Makes the sweating worthwhile. Sort of. Almost.
