Trust me, if the weather is rotten on the day in question, I will likely stay home.
It's charity fun walk/run, which is the sort of thing they advise for a first race. No pressure. And since kids' activities, etc, are involved, I am guessing that they are going to take care to keep things as skid-free as possible.
Based on my XC skiing experience, keep your plans flexible. You could have anything between subzero and slush. Or rain. Protect ears and hands -- even if your core temperature is comfortable from the exercise, you can still get frostbite in the extremities. I've skied in wind-chills low enough that my sweat frosted over the outside of polar fleece pants and jackets. 5K is long enough that you may need to start with a fleece jacket and then pull it off after running a kay or two.
Thanks! I have bits and pieces of technical wear from my walking-King-through-the-woods-in-the-middle-of-winter days. A nylon windsuit. Half-zip tops with fleece lining, and those real thin base layer pullovers. Thin gloves, and ear coverings. I may need to get socks that cover my ankles.
