Sunday night crossover

I am sure that somewhere out in the netverse, someone has posted a Jane Austen/Tolkien crossover. Well, this is mine. Bits and pieces came to me whilst I brushed my teeth, they did they did, which should give you some indication of my Sunday night frame of mind. It's fragments at best, but I think there's some potential here.

So, who is better suited to play the Ring, the Precioussssss? Mr. Bingley or Mr. Darcy?

I am inclined toward Mr Bingley as the Ring, given that he always struck me as rather passive and inert. One over whom much fuss is made, but who seldom if ever makes a fuss on his own. Gollum, the jealous protector, might be Miss Bingley, I think, hoarding her dearest possession until she finds the most suitable heiress to whom she might give it.

Eliza Bennett works as Frodo if her mission becomes acquiring the Ring for her sister. Although she doesn't play a large role in P&P, I really like the character of Mrs Gardiner and think her sufficiently Gandalfian. Wisdom is thin on the ground in that book, and I thought she possessed a great deal. Granted, my perception could be colored by the fact that I loved Barbara Shelley's portrayal in one of the Beeb's versions from the early 80s.

Lady Catherine de Bourgh is Saruman.

Darcy is Aragorn. Mr Wickham is Boromirish---maybe not. Miss Darcy might make a good Galadriel--distant and wise beyond her years, but almost taken in by a scoundrel.

And now I need to sign off, wondering whether Mr Collins is Balrog or an orc...

Collins probably would need to be an orc, since the Balrog destroys Gandalf, and Collins doesn't threaten Mrs. Gardiner (as you say, one of the wisest people in the book.)

And why not combine two favorite worlds? %^)

[livejournal.com profile] sartorias and others were discussing Fantasy of Manners in their groups. I think it stuck in my head.

I know P&P better than the Rings books, so there may be some mismatches. But I do see the entries to some ballrooms as equivalent to yawning chasms of Hell.

Yeah--in spades. I've never read Vanity Fair, but I think it's time.

Have you read/seen Persuasion? In some ways, it may be my favorite Austin. The BBC version of PERSUASION was luminous. I actually got my Ex to see it with me, and he was fascinated--how the twitch of an eyebrow revealed so much.

Never seen/read Persuasion.

Need to buy some books.

Mibs! Why does my cone hurt?

Oh, because it's six a.m., I went to bed four and a half hours ago, no caffeine yet, and Mr Bingley as the ring caused my gray matter to wibble against my skull, causing this echoing knocking sound....

It's all your fault my thoughts wandered in that direction.

No one to blame but yourself, nope.
