Given that when they smell blood, the press can actually do its job...

Does anyone out there think they could survive a real VP-level vetting? Or would you take a pass, either because you wouldn't want the intrusion or because there's stuff in your past that wouldn't pass muster (you don't need to say which, of course)?

For VP, as is, of course not! There is a whole slew of things that wouldn't be suitable!

considering I'm female and have had a girlfriend in my past...Yeah, I wouldn't pass muster.

You wonder if we'll ever reach the point where the things that have nothing to do with job performance stop mattering.

Depends on whether they’re doing their job on reporting real scandals or just picking whatever is controversial. For instance, there’s no way the right wing would ever vote for me, no matter how many good economic policies I proposed, because I’m a mostly-out-of-the-broom-closet pagan and therefore evil no matter how much it qualifies me to want to protect everyone’s religious freedom. (I use “mostly” because we didn’t actually make the pagan symbolism in the wedding explicit, to spare the sensibilities of my wife’s relatives. They thought it was just a pirate-themed wedding, and didn’t notice that all the talk of the sun and the sand and the sea and the wind was creating a ritual circle...)

Wow. And it wasn't even THE ENQUIRER.

I think Alaskans are a little miffed that the McCain campaign is running their state.

I'm not attractive enough and I have no state or national-level political experience. I'm a messy housekeeper and a bookworm and strongly pro-environmental. I'm sure they could find someone from my past to say something harmful, but I'm not sure what would be on the juicy side things. God knows I'm not perfect, but my imperfections tend to be boring as well as annoying.

So I don't think I'd survive as a candidate but for different reasons than Palin. When I was on city council here, none of us got a salary (for instance), so none of us was worth bribing, and I'm the one who exposed an attempt at what I considered (and so did state law) undue influence.
