The iMac crashed in the middle of an attempt to run the hardware test. I'm afraid the next step is the Genius Bar, but it will be a few weeks before I can get down there.

Something is seriously wrong. Can't tell if it's hardware or software if it crashes while you're trying to run the install disc.

The install disc or the Leopard disc? Hubby came home yesterday and said, "You can't boot from some of the original Leopard discs." Apparently there was a bug in them that's since been fixed.

Can you boot without the disc?

The install disc, which is, I am guessing, a Tiger disc since I bought the system in late 2004. (It may even be a Panther disc, or whichever cat was operational in late '04).

I can boot without the disc sometimes. The mac will work fine for extended periods, then freeze up and/or crash, or crash right away. It's one of those variable problems.
