She's here now. She's very active. King is exhausted, and Gaby shows little sign of slowing down. They already chased one another around the birdbath garden many times, and they're outside now. I understand there's a great deal of excitement on both sides.
One of the first things she did after she came inside was poop on the hallway rug. I understood she was housebroken, but well, excitement.
The folks who adopted her on Wednesday brought her back on Thursday. They said she kept wanting to go outside. They lived in an apartment with a community yard, and I can see how that wouldn't have worked out. Like I said, very active. The fact that she was cooped up in a kennel for most of the week probably didn;t help.
The vet can't tell whether she's been fixed or not, so it could get interesting.
She's very affectionate and playful. A sweet dog. Unless she slows down eventually, she may wear King out. She's already worn me out.
She's eaten about a cup of dry food. At first, I tried giving her dry food with some liver and canned food, and she tried to roll in it instead of eat it. Must have been the smell, because she ate the dry food in the usual way.
I'll post a picture as soon as she sits still enough to let me take one.
UPDATE: She lying at my feet now. King fled to the dining room so he could get some shut-eye. We'll see how long the quiet lasts.
UPDATE #2: She heard a sound in the dining room. Didnt realize it was King. Woofed quietly, then went into the dining room to check things out. Saw it was King. Came back in living room to lie at my feet.

Date: 2008-08-23 12:59 am (UTC)I can just imagine Gaby, who'd met you and King, thinking "Wait--these aren't the right people--I don't smell that big black dog on them--what happened!!" And then "HERE they are! Oh, goody!!"

Date: 2008-08-23 01:59 am (UTC)Anyway, I stopped in, which was when I found out that the folks had already brought her back. So I drove home, got King, and brought him along for visit #2. He pretty much ignored Gaby--too many smells in the office backyard. Too many distractions.
I decided to take the plunge and bring her home. She and King pretty much ignored one another in the truck, as well. Nothing happened until I turned them loose in the backyard, at which point King twigged on to the fact that THERE WAS ANOTHER DOG HERE. Some trepidation at first. Then they started playing.
They're both sleeping now, which is a blessing. Gaby wouldn't leave King alone there for a while, which I guess is normal. If King were about three years younger, this would be perfect. As it is, unless he gets into better condition, she is going to wear him out.

Date: 2008-08-23 03:03 am (UTC)But conditioning, yes. I would like to see him improve in that regard. It wouldn't help if I ran with him--my best run is his slow trot. I don't want to try running him while riding a bike because I've seen folks wipe out trying to do that. But I have a big back yard, and King loves to play tag, so we may have something here.

Date: 2008-08-23 03:53 am (UTC)King has always loved being chased. I can tell how he's slowed down over the last 4 years--I remember how he used to dash around the perimeter of the yard with Mickey at his heels.
This will be good for him. He needed it.
