Except I made the mistake (once again) of pouring warm-to-hot water into the coffee maker. Coffee makers being designed at a specific boil rate---me, pouring in water that was already near the boil-to-fill minus drip capacity of the coffee maker.
I used to work on nuclear reactors...you'd think I'd have mastered this heat transfer stuff by now.
Done that. That is the sad thing about caffeine addiction. I'm not able to fully function in the morning before I've had my fix, and tend to be forgetful and clumsy.
I turned on the coffeemaker, and then I LEFT THE ROOM. Smelled that lovely aroma, heard the "I'm all finished now" beep of the brewer, and went back to the kitchen to get my cuppa.
Lucky for me that I brew only 4 cups at a time, which is almost the capacity of the basket..."almost" being the operative word here.
After having done this waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many times, I have bought (and adore) my self-contained coffee maker...put the water in the tank, pour into bottom, put tank on top, put coffee filter in, add coffee and lid...wait.
No coffee on floor.
My pot:
Building on the strengths of the BrewStation Coffeemaker, the BrewStation Deluxe has more brewing choices and more timesaving features all in a distinctive new design. Virtually eliminates overcooked, scorched-tasting coffee with a separate keep-warm heater that automatically adjusts to the coffee's temperature, keeping coffee hot and flavorful cup after cup.
Hamilton Beach BrewStation Deluxe 12-Cup Coffeemaker
* One-hand dispensing — no carafe, no pouring, no spilling * Enough clearance for tall travel mugs * Distinctive new design — stylish stainless steel control panel surrounds a large clock with blue backlight * Ease of use — swivel base for easy water reservoir filling * Features a permanent gold-tone coffee filter, cleaning indicator and water filter with replacement indicator * Coffee tastes fresh longer — virtually eliminates overcooked, scorched-tasting coffee with a separate keep-warm heater that automatically adjusts to the coffee's temperature * 24-hour clock with programmable auto shutoff times (0, 1, 2, 3 or 4 hours)
No, it doesn't get easier. In many ways, I think it gets worse because you know all the things that can go wrong, all of which are beyond your control.
That's in roughly the same category of advice as, "If you want to make toast, you have to turn the toaster on," though the coffee consequences are way messier.

I can only imagine.
You weren't burned, were you? Do you keep an aloe plant in you kitchen?
HEX BREAKER releases on Friday, and I'm a bundle of nerves. Does it ever get easier?
