I don't usually send out a list o' links, but these snagged my eye during the morning surf.

"NYC Pub Owner bans 'Danny Boy' during month of March." "It's overplayed, it's been ranked among the 25 most depressing songs of all time and it's more appropriate for a funeral than for a St. Patrick's Day celebration," said Shaun Clancy, who owns Foley's Pub and Restaurant, across the street from the Empire State Building.

The mayor of a village in southwest France has threatened residents with severe punishment if they die, because there is no room left in the overcrowded cemetery to bury them. "Offenders will be severely punished."

And finally:

High on Mount Sinai, Moses was on psychedelic drugs when he heard God deliver the Ten Commandments, an Israeli researcher claimed in a study published this week. Blame the bark of the acacia tree, apparently.

Back when karaoke was new, I had the misfortune to go to an Irish bar on Saint Paddy's day only to discover they'd rented a karaoke system for the occasion. It seemed as if every other person who got up there wanted to sing Danny Boy and refused to be denied. We must have heard a dozen bad versions before we left the pub with our ears ringing, and I finally understood why one of the Irish folk groups I knew would sing any requested song, except that one.

My folks used to watch the Lawrence Welk Show. They featured an "Irish tenor," and I swear Danny Boy was the only song he ever sang. It struck me as...overwrought.

And as the article said, the lyrics weren't even written by an Irishman.
