I don't usually send out a list o' links, but these snagged my eye during the morning surf.

"NYC Pub Owner bans 'Danny Boy' during month of March." "It's overplayed, it's been ranked among the 25 most depressing songs of all time and it's more appropriate for a funeral than for a St. Patrick's Day celebration," said Shaun Clancy, who owns Foley's Pub and Restaurant, across the street from the Empire State Building.

The mayor of a village in southwest France has threatened residents with severe punishment if they die, because there is no room left in the overcrowded cemetery to bury them. "Offenders will be severely punished."

And finally:

High on Mount Sinai, Moses was on psychedelic drugs when he heard God deliver the Ten Commandments, an Israeli researcher claimed in a study published this week. Blame the bark of the acacia tree, apparently.

Okay, now I've got a handprint on my face from the facepalm I did.

I'm an Gnostic [non-literal Christian who believes in (real, disciplined) science as the path to ultimate enlightment -- yeah, long way to go, but it's nice to be in on the ground floor, huh.]

so.... I never believed in this notion of an anthromorphic diety who speaks to some guys. But the bark of the acacia tree -- now that just makes so much sense.

No wait. Not for me -- for all the researchers who hadn't thought of that (or brought it up) before!

Hey, I just noticed that you have two of my favorite links -- Jane Espenson and Despair, Inc. Love both those places. I will definitely have to check out Daily Puppy, too.

I used to work in mfg/pd for a pharma co.

Despair, Inc posters are the best. One of my favorites is the Change tornado: When the winds of change blow hard enough, the most trivial of things can become deadly projectiles.

Jane has some really good writing posts sometimes.

Daily Puppy is the best. They've been showing lots of small dogs lately, but you can search by breed. They show grown-up puppies, too.

The day job. Always Interesting.

Well there are a lot happier songs for St. Paddy's Day. Still, if I were this fellow, I wouldn't let anyone run a tab. It would be just the trick to run up a tab, launch into song, and get ejected before paying.

As for the French, what are they going to do, burn the dead? Just one more reason I'll never understand that nation.

I think the answer was to bury them in another town's cemetery, which I could see some folks not wanting to have happen.

Back when karaoke was new, I had the misfortune to go to an Irish bar on Saint Paddy's day only to discover they'd rented a karaoke system for the occasion. It seemed as if every other person who got up there wanted to sing Danny Boy and refused to be denied. We must have heard a dozen bad versions before we left the pub with our ears ringing, and I finally understood why one of the Irish folk groups I knew would sing any requested song, except that one.

My folks used to watch the Lawrence Welk Show. They featured an "Irish tenor," and I swear Danny Boy was the only song he ever sang. It struck me as...overwrought.

And as the article said, the lyrics weren't even written by an Irishman.

I am 100% in agreement with the pub owner. I only wish someone would ban the playing of..oh, gah, I've blocked it out of my memory...that tune they all play on the bagpipes in the St. Patrick's Day parade. I'm driven insane by it every March 17th (which is why I often take that day off).

I think you mean "Scotland the Brave." I could never understand why they play it during St. Patty's, since its the national anthem of a completely different country.

And yes, "Danny Boy" is much overplayed. I agree wholeheartedly with this one.

Think I'd get thrown out of the pub if I requested "Londonderry Air"?
