Vacation!

I'm on vacation!

As you remember, Bob, Kris decided to chew up all her vacation earlier in the year by taking a leave of absence from the day job. Those two months--half vacation, half unpaid personal leave--went by too quickly, and the purpose of the exercise, namely, to finish ENDGAME...let's just say that didn't work out. And I returned to work in March with the realization that I had pretty much shot my wad for the year. I could bargain days here and there as long as I made up the time, but those "I think I'll take off Friday and make it a three-day writing weekend" were but a memory.

Now we teeter on the brink of a new year, and I have vacation time again. We will hold those days close like a miser their gold, oh yes we will. I am taking off all next week. After that, I may use an odd Friday or Monday until the book is out the door, but after that, I will take care. There's Wiscon in May. Pretty much open after that. I'd like to have a week or two around the holidays, even though I will admit that you get a lot done when there's no one else in the office.

I have vacation again. Wow.

We are so there!!

We blew all of K's vacation days on friggin' funerals in 2006, and could only afford for her to take one week off unpaid. Her new days kicked in December 1st, and we too are hoarding. Because, man, it *sucked.* I mean, I could take a day here and there... but why? We got burned out and owly, in a big way.

It was such a pain to time appointments.

Even the time I bargained didn't feel like vacation. I spent Bouchercon finishing up the first draft of ENDGAME. The Hilton Monona Terrace is a lovely hotel, but it's an expensive place to hole up and write a book. Then after I drove home, it was back to work the next day. No time to decompress.

Not making that mistake again. Nope.

Ugh. The no time to decompress thing sucks so bad!
