Vacation!

I'm on vacation!

As you remember, Bob, Kris decided to chew up all her vacation earlier in the year by taking a leave of absence from the day job. Those two months--half vacation, half unpaid personal leave--went by too quickly, and the purpose of the exercise, namely, to finish ENDGAME...let's just say that didn't work out. And I returned to work in March with the realization that I had pretty much shot my wad for the year. I could bargain days here and there as long as I made up the time, but those "I think I'll take off Friday and make it a three-day writing weekend" were but a memory.

Now we teeter on the brink of a new year, and I have vacation time again. We will hold those days close like a miser their gold, oh yes we will. I am taking off all next week. After that, I may use an odd Friday or Monday until the book is out the door, but after that, I will take care. There's Wiscon in May. Pretty much open after that. I'd like to have a week or two around the holidays, even though I will admit that you get a lot done when there's no one else in the office.

I have vacation again. Wow.

Good luck in finishing! Books are such contrary demons sometimes, they don't recognize deadlines.

They don't, do they? I so wanted to finish it during that time, and it wasn't there. Funny-this would be the perfect time for me to take off two months, but I don't want to do without vacation the rest of the year. It makes a difference.

We are so there!!

We blew all of K's vacation days on friggin' funerals in 2006, and could only afford for her to take one week off unpaid. Her new days kicked in December 1st, and we too are hoarding. Because, man, it *sucked.* I mean, I could take a day here and there... but why? We got burned out and owly, in a big way.

It was such a pain to time appointments.

Even the time I bargained didn't feel like vacation. I spent Bouchercon finishing up the first draft of ENDGAME. The Hilton Monona Terrace is a lovely hotel, but it's an expensive place to hole up and write a book. Then after I drove home, it was back to work the next day. No time to decompress.

Not making that mistake again. Nope.

Ugh. The no time to decompress thing sucks so bad!

Having vacation is always a good thing, especially when you just need a day in which to decompress.

Yay for the vacation!

*hoards and manages time off like a mad thing*

So I typically don't have decompression time, in exchange for having more running away time.

Being as I'm out of sick occurences (til midnight, anyway), I'll be taking my luggage to work today, and I'll have 12 hours from when I get off the plane Monday til I ahve to be at work Tuesday.

Funny how when you set aside time to write the words won't come. But the morning your head is bursting with ideas you have to leave the house for work or something else you don't want to do. Bah.

It's aggravating. I go through all that trouble to arrange for the time off, and my writing brain spends it going Wheee! and blowing bubbles in its milk.
