ksmith: (running shoe)

A small lump with swelling over my right achilles tendon. Tender to the touch. Blew up just wonderfully after today's attempt at 2 miles.

Yes, I warm up beforehand. I walk 10-15 minutes before I start to jog.

I can't tell you how PO'd I am with my body right now. Because I don't weekend warrior it. I don't push it to extremes. I find something I like to do and I take it slow and *&&^%$# if it doesn't backfire.

I was backpacking this weekend with a couple long distance runners, one of whom sometimes uses racing flats, which seem to be mostly sole protection. At the end she got impatient with the pace (I was accomodating our youngest hiker who was a bit sick) and ran down the last few miles. She also did the trip in trailrunners, trading the lightness and agility for the inconvenience of going through the mud, water and snow.

Is she small of frame? The racing flats I've seen are recommended for smaller runners. If you're bigger/weigh more, it seems like you need a little more support.

The shoes that did this to me are technically trail shoes. Grey/silver in color.

I read that the high heel tags don't bother runners who hit the ground perfectly, but if you shift/pronate/whatever, the tag will run against the heel and cause problems. oddly enough, the walking hurt more than the running. I think this is because my heel hits first when I walk, sending the tag rubbing against the tendon.

Today, I'm left with a nodule that hurts to the touch. I understand that I should work on massaging it away, but we may wait a bit before giving that a try.

Ice, vitamin I, and rest, says the guy who ignored the same thing in January and is now undergoing iontophoresis therapy to calm the d*** thing down. Yet another way to apply cortisone to Paul's aging body......

The coldpack helped a lot. And I don't think I'll be running for the next week.

Before then, I need to take a knife to the shoes...
