Saturday this 'n' that
May. 7th, 2011 02:11 pmBusy day so far. And a lovely day, if you're talking mid/late March--cloudy, 50s, with sprinkles.
Anyway. Went to the local Big Box for potting soil and a laundry drying rack, and wound up getting a some-assembly-required laundry cart, bathroom rugs, a new shower curtain, a dining room rug, a couple of flat-leaf parsley plants, and various and sundry kitchen things. Brought it all home, then worked outside for a few hours. The weather isn't exactly conducive, but things needed doing.
So. Weeded and prepped the raised bed, and sowed lettuce seeds. Cleaned out a couple of large pots, and planted the parsley in one and seeds for 5 types of basil in the other. I've been trying to grow these basil varieties for years now--lemon, cinnamon, dark opal, sweet, and lettuce leaf--and only seem to have luck with the sweet. Last year, I covered the planter with chicken wire to keep out the squirrels, and wound up losing the seedlings to a caterpillar that took advantage of the protected environment to gorge. This year, I'll leave off the chicken wire.
I also installed a garden hose holder that's attached directly to the house. I gave up on those plastic wind 'em up boxes--the hoses kinked and jammed anyway. The boxes weathered and cracked after a summer or two, and were so big that it was hard to find a good place to put them. I didn't care if they could be seen. I just didn't want to trip over them. So I bought a simple wrought metal rack and nailed it to the house. Looks a lot nicer, and the hose is as out of the way as it's going to get.
King helped in the installation by swiping and eating the instructions. Luckily, I had already read them.
Haircut app't later. Then I may switch out the dining room rug, or bake banana bread, or work on the bathroom. Too much to do, and too little time.

May. 7th, 2011 06:49 pmMy "dining room" is actually more of a dinette area. A regular-size dining table w/ 6-8 chairs can't fit, so I have one of those small 4-chair tables. Maybe 30" x 30"?
The magazines, mail, receipts, etc had piled up over the last few months, leaving me a laptop-size area to eat/work. I thinned the easy stuff last week. Today, I snapped, dragged in the recycle bins, and trashed unread magazines, catalogs from which I did intend to buy stuff--I tell myself I'll remember what I want. Sorted receipts for filing. Dragged out the shredder from the office, and shredded what needed shredding. It took over an hour and a half to clear off that small table. Filled two standard size bins to the halfway point. I could have fit everything in one bin, but I wouldn't have been able to lift it.
One year of Wine Spectator out the door, unread. I received it as a gift sub when I pledged support for the local classical station, so it's not...yes, it is a waste. Yet when I sub to online magazines, I don't read them, either. Granted, at least I'm not killing any trees.
And over the course of the clean-up, I uncovered the broccoli raab seeds that I intended to plant with the lettuces. Got them out there in time for a watering by a passing shower.
