I don't usually send out a list o' links, but these snagged my eye during the morning surf.

That pre-formed, scallop-edged bacon product that the cafeteria started using because the slices don't crumble like the real stuff, which made it difficult to charge by the slice?

Doesn't taste like bacon.

It tastes like bacon if you removed the bacon. Bacon ghosts. Distant bacon memories.

One thing is doesn't taste like? Bacon.

Is mind reading next? Researchers using brain scans try to predict a person's thoughts.

The Berkeley team, which published its study online Wednesday in the journal Nature, used a brain scan to find patterns of activity when people looked at black-and-white images of items such as bales of hay, a starfish or a sports car. When the people then looked at different photos, a software program drew on activity in the brain's vision center to guess which images they saw with up to 92 percent accuracy.

Other researchers have stolen glances at people's secret intentions and memories, and the new findings suggest that brain scanners could even reveal the elusive content of dreams.

"The Elusive Content of Dreams" would, I think, make a great title.

New glasses

Visit to eyedoctor today. Eyes are a little worse, which I expected given that I hadn't been in 18 months and I could tell that the reading portion of the prescription wasn't working well anymore.

I like the old frames, which I wore in the latest author photo. But I checked out the newest batch in the office, and found these. Tommy Hilfiger, OK, but a cool shape that's different enough from the current frames, but with the same color scheme--black and cream--that goes well with my dark hair and skin tone.

I get them in a week. Then I'll have the old frames made into sunglasses. I always get Transitions lenses, and they don't darken in the car. Hence, the need for sunglasses.
