Meme has a long e. It's pronounced "meem".

All this time, I'd been pronouncing it "mem". Forget the fact that it looks like "heme", which I've always pronounced "heem". To me, it was "mem". Even now that I know better, I still want to say "mem".

At least I never pronounced it "memie". As in, oh no, not another screamin' meme!

So, anyone else have any blocks when it comes to certain words? Spelling or pronunciation, doesn't matter.

Matte. I want to pronounce it ma-TAY even though I know it is just plain old mat.


The other is the abbreviation "Lt." I KNOW it stands for lieutenant, but if I'm reading out loud and run into it, I say "little." At least I know why I do that - many years ago, I'd read the newspaper's comic pages to my younger and still non-literate siblings. I never asked for any help from my parents - if I ran into a word I didn't know, I'd just sound it out and sail grandly onward. If Cliff or Jeanne asked me what the word meant, I'd make something up based on what I thought made sense based on the words that surrounded it. Beetle Bailey was one of the comics, and, even though I was a dedicated viewer of the television show Combat! and knew what a lieutenant was, I had no idea that the abbreviation was Lt. "Lt. Fuzz" was really small compared to the Sergeant Snorkle (I had managed to figure out the "Sgt" stood for Sergeant), so I decided that Lt. meant Little. I still think of him as Little Fuzz when I read Beetle Bailey.

I used to get stuck on the word "weapon" during my comic book reading phase, ages 4-6. I sounded it out as "wee-pon". That pronunciation is still stuck in my head.

I grew up in Buffalo NY, and as a consequence watched some Canadian kids shows. My mom had to untrain me from saying 'zed' instead of 'zee'.
