Sunday, chicken's roasting
May. 8th, 2011 02:59 pmTook the new shower curtain, a very quiet bamboo pattern in shades of green and white, out of the package with a mind toward installing it. Three hours later, I had indeed done so, along with executing a stem to stern cleaning of the bathroom that included stripping the old wallpaper border and installing a new switchplate. I even washed the floor and the window. Vacuumed the window screen.
The wallpaper border had to go. It was a busy paisley in jewel tones that worked okay with the old cabbage rose shower curtain, but clashed mightily with the bamboo. The switchplate was also decorated with roses, so I exchanged it for one of the old kitchen fixtures decorated with ivy. Ivy ain't bamboo, but it is green/cream, which works better than pink and red.
Maybe this only happens to me, but it's funny how colors and patterns that seemed so wonderful years ago now elicit "WTH were we thinking?"
Bathroom still needs a semi-major overhaul. But the overall color scheme is now very quiet--white fixtures with cream walls, and accents of grey, green, and cream. I can add dull purple, shades of camel/brown, or other quiet tones. I think that will be the palette if/when I redo the room.
I'm whipped. Summoned the energy to prep the chicken, which I stuffed with thyme, garlic, and lemon and am roasting on a bed of onion and carrots. The All-Clad roaster is finally getting its maiden voyage, and the aromas are starting to waft. I just had a glass of wine and a rosemary/sea salt/sourdough roll, which I warmed until crisp and slathered with butter. Call it an appetizer.
Nice day. 60s. The morning was sunny, but it's clouding now. Still a good day for seeds to warm and begin the road to germination. I put out the seedling tray, too.
Okay, I got done most of the stuff I wanted to. Where's my weekend?

Date: 2011-05-08 09:11 pm (UTC)I just realized that the bedroom curtains are 23-24 years old. I don't even want to think about replacing them, because it will lead to new curtain rods, painting with possible plastering (or however you get rid of the roughness of textured paint), floor refinishing, and furniture.

Date: 2011-05-08 09:53 pm (UTC)Remember when straight legged pants looked, well, odd, after flares? And when tight jeans first came in? The market/visuals change what we expect and thus what feels "right" to our eye. I remember when rich harvest gold and avocado and browns were the latest thing, with wrought iron handles and a really rich cabin-of-foodies feel. And then rose and soft greens were soothing and rich. Now both are too busy and lack color clarity and clean-ness. And now we're obsessed with granite counter tops which take a lot of upkeep and are busy busy in tone. And stainless steel appliances are "required" even though they show every finger print (which is why I stick with white). (shrug) Does it work, does it leak, does it keep warm/cool/right. Those are important things. Along with Does It Make You Wince. Paisley wallpaper borders are definitely in the wince category for me, and obviously you too!
Congratulations on the cooking AND on getting so much done otherwise. Impressed.

Date: 2011-05-09 12:02 am (UTC)The granite countertops I've seen are awfully busy. I would like new countertops eventually, but might stick with something a little less overbearing. I don't know how you can have any other patterns in the room w/o major clashing.
My small appliances--coffeemaker, toaster, food processor--are stainless, and they do show every print. My appliances are almond. I like almond.
Banana bread is in the oven and all the dishes are washed. I'm stopping now. My feet hurt.
