Five things make a post:

1) Today at the vet's, I heard something I never thought I would hear Pt. 1--Gaby needs to lose a pound or two. She's up to 43 pounds, and 38-40 is a better weight for her. Last summer, she reduced her intake on her own due to the heat, and went down to 38 pounds. This extra poundage may just be winter weight gain, but I will cut back on her food a little to help things along. She's not flabby at all. Very solid. But dense.

2) Something I never thought I would hear Pt. 2--King's weight is just about right. He weighs 112, which is 9 pounds less than he weighed last fall. Keeping him this low will be a challenge. He moves around less in the summer heat, and I can't compensate by feeding him less. He's hunting down every crumb on the floor as it is.

3) The pet barrier worked well

4) Sometimes you want treats. Today's included a small lemon tart and, well, fish sticks. Just one of those unexplainable cravings. I baked the sticks until crispy and rolled them up in a whole wheat tortilla with greens, ketchup, and a spritz of lemon juice. They were good. So was the tart.

5) Mouse Wars saw the introduction of a new weapon, a shop vac. What a wonderful thing. It sucked up all the seeds and dirt and mess. The only problem was that I couldn't get the casters inserted--I even tried pounding them in with a rubber mallet, but no go. The insertion holes are just small. So I put the canister on a piece of cardboard and dragged it around the garage. It worked.

Six mice removed today, including one that croaked in the trap. Yes, I am aware that they may be returnees, but maybe if they return to find no more food and no more places to hide, they will go elsewhere. In the event that elsewhere turns out to be under the deck--given Gaby's attentiveness as of late, I think this is the case--I have reinforced the dryer vent cover. That's the only way for them to get into the house unless they start dropping in through the chimney.

I think I'm looking at a couple weekends of work. I bought a couple of shelving units, and I would like to assemble those tomorrow, get some stuff off the floor, and get rid of every cardboard box I can find. It may be a while before Kuro gets his room back.

As far as King, raw greenbeans (if he will eat them) will make him feel full and not so hungry, but not provide him with a ton of calories. Or raw broccoli.

I will try those. I think he will eat them if I mix them with the other stuff. How much? Half a cup? Start with a few and build gradually so he doesn't gas up?

There will probably be dog farts no matter how gradually you add 'em. I'd just start small and work up to whatever it takes to keep him from being obnoxiously hungry!

Is there a reason not to cook the beans, or at least blanch them? I ask because I am pretty sure I read somewhere that a small amount of cooking makes them easier to digest.

Yeah...you don't want him to digest them, because then you're adding calories. They're basically there as a filler for his stomach, to keep him full longer.

That being said, some people do cook them, and they're still not too terribly digestible for dogs.
