Long day

All day meeting today, consisting of a series of presentations about different projects in my division. It started at 8am--I didn't get to present until 330pm.



It went ok, for which I was glad. It took a week, off and on, to pull the thing together, give my boss a chance to look it over, then make suggested changes. I was sort of stressing over it.
Now it's over until next quarter. Yea!

After an early thaw and the resulting Mud, the temps have fallen back to seasonal levels. This means the ground has refrozen, which in turn means that I can walk in my backyard again without feeling like I'm going to get sucked down into Grimpen Mire. Always a good thing.

As for Endgame, plugging away. Worked out some of the complicated political stuff, as well as some of the relationship stuff. The first big Event will be happening within a couple of chapters, which means it's time to work out the build-up.

Let's hear it for build-up!

Oh, if you're interested, karentraviss is taking posted questions for John Jarrold, an editor-turned-agent. Good, feet-on-the-ground info, the broadcasting of which I hope she doesn't mind.

The buildup is at least as much fun as the event, and it lasts longer too!

It seems to when you're in the process of writing it. "Boy, is this drawn-out and boring." That's the problem with writing set-up. It takes me for*ever*. I lose my sense of story-time. I have to stop every so often and go back and read 10-15 pages, just to assure myself that the thing is actually moving along.

And you do build-up good. If by good one means screaming tension leading to some unspecified train-interaction that has the reader muttering "ohshitohshitohshit..." or carefully putting the book down and getting a stiff drink reading for what is coming next.

Actually, part of my build-up problem now is deciding whether it's better if the reader doesn't know what's coming, or if they do. I'm inclined toward the latter, being a fan of Hitchcock.
