At least the issue was easily fixed. And the wash machine and dryer got an unexpected midweek workout.

I approach these things from the opposite perspective:

"I am the Master, and thou, toilet, art my servant. In my benevolence, I shalt clear thy clog that thou may flow free. I shalt calm thy waters, and return them to seas from whence they came. And I shalt forgive thy sins, and make thee clean and wholesome once more. For I am mighty, and thou hast no power over me."

I wonder if you need to treat them like that from the get-go. Once they've detected weakness, they will never let you regain the upper hand.
