This version of banana bread contains chopped dates, chopped apple, allspice, mace, and cinnamon. Oh, does it smell good. I wrapped up the half that remained from the last loaf and popped it in the freezer. It's good, but I really want to taste this new one.

Wow. Did you just throw in, or was there a recipe?

There's a basic banana bread recipe. I don't think I ever made it without adding at least a teaspoon cinnamon. But it's a very forgiving recipe. At different times, I've added various spices by the teaspoon/half-teaspoon: cinnamon, allspice, mace (1/2 tsp), ground ginger. I've added cracked black pepper. Candied ginger (maybe a quarter-cup). Half a cup of toasted nuts. The time I added the 12-oz bag of good dark chocolate chips...that was a little much. I could only eat a finger-size slice of that at a time because it was the banana bread equivalent of Paula Deen's deep-fried cheesecake.

These last few loaves, I have added 1/4 cup or so of dried currents and the same amount of date pieces. Then with this last loaf, I added 1/4 cup dates and a chopped apple (a large MacIntosh). You could probably add any type of fruit/nut/spice you wanted. Some of them overwhelm the banana flavor, but the dates and currents seemed to enhance it.
