I do often feel like that just prior to departure. Why am I going? I can't afford it. I won't have fun. It isn't worth all the hassle. Travel sucks. Once I get underway, I usually have fun, though.
With this trip...I was even looking forward to the 7-hour drive through the cornfields. I really would have liked the break. Now I have to wait until 2011 and the vacation day reboot.
Oh rats--pbray mentioned someone who she talked into coming to WFC in part because I would be there, and I wondered if it was you.
Work will cease being harsh on the day I walk out the door, retirement paperwork in hand. Until then, I do what needs done. And tell myself that I need to manage my vacation better.
I am tentatively planning a trip to NYC the early part of next year. I know you guys live a long train ride away. but maybe let's think about some kind of meet-up?
pbray is a fan of the NYC day trip, as am I. It is actually a pretty easy bus ride down and back. the Greyhound treats us well. Let either/both of us know if you do wander through. I know I would be happy to come meet you :)
Managing vacation really is harder than it should be. I was excellent at blowing it all early in the year and sulking through Q3 and Q4.
Probably later in March--it seems a long ways out, but the worst of winter may be over (maybe). The 2008 Ninc Conference was held there in late March, and as I recall things weren't bad. I'd like to stay for a week.
I want to stay in a cool boutique hotel, see a show or two, visit a museum or three, and just walk around and soak things in. I do like NYC.
I would have needed unpaid leave in order to go, and management vetoed it. Maybe I assumed too much when I went ahead and made plans w/o knowing for sure, but I had discussed it earlier this summer, then sent out a reminder email a week or so ago.
There were Reasons given. If none of them come to pass in the next few months, I am going to be ticked.
Bright side? I don't lose a paycheck. And Editor did sound extremely agreeable to a New York visit.
Meanwhile, I have vacation days and comp time that I will lose because I simply can't use them this year, due to special projects and lack of backup coverage. Proof, I suppose, that the universe is fundamentally unfair.
But a visit to NYC in March does sound like a good plan--weather permitting--and fireun and I can come down to the city and harass you.

And I speak as a woman who is bringing her company issued laptop to WFC so I can get in a half-day's work on Friday....
