ksmith: (King2)

Heard from the vet today. King's thyroid is normal; in fact, all his numbers were, in the vet's words, "really, really good." A good thing to hear about your 9 year old puppy.

His cholesterol was a little high last year--I didn't even realize that they tracked that for dogs--but it's fallen back down to normal. Given that he's gained several pounds over that time, I find it interesting.

Anyway. I need to cut back on his food a little. No more canned food topper on his dry food, since vet said canned foods can be higher in fat. I may sneak in a tablespoon every so often, just as a treat. Poor King. He already washes the floor with his tongue in his never-ending search for crumbs. Now he may just try to eat the floor.

I've heard many people swear by adding canned green beans or pumpkin to a dog's meal to add some bulk without calories. Might be worth a try.

I may try that. I tried to feed pumpkin to Gaby when she was going through her gut issues, and she wouldn't touch it. King, however, ate it right up. He would probably eat green beans, too. Poor thing. They just had their dinner, and Gaby left a larger than usual amount behind. King was standing behind her, waiting for her to leave the vicinity--the look he gave me when I took her bowl away. "But Mom, why...?"

Do they use grocery store canned pumpkin, or specially formulated stuff for dogs? I've found fortified pumpkin made by Fruitables, but it's $4 a can.

Regular canned pumpkin for pies (human food). I did read somewhere that there was a major problem with pumpkin crops and it was incredibly hard to get this year.

I think they got more rain downstate today. I hope those pumpkin come around. I'll look in the stores this weekend, but I may need to buy the fortified doggy stuff for a month or two.

Still? I looked for pumpkin last year, and heard the same thing. Stores had none on the shelves from T-giving on.
