Someone either tell me how this works. If you try it, and it doesn't work for you, please comment.

I tried it twice, and the site guessed the right symbol both times. I recall once reading the explanation for sites like this, but I can't recall it at present.

Taking a look at it, they've got the symbols arranged so that no matter what number you start out with, when you subtract the sum of the digits you get the same symbol.

99 - 18 = 81
98 - 17 = 81
97 - 16 = 81
81 - 9 = 72
80 - 8 = 72

The symbols repeat every nine numbers, I think.
