I entered a contest over at the Chicago Tribune's Facebook page, and holy crap, I won. I never win contests.

I was planning on buying an iPad later this summer. Yup.

I'm just sitting here going "whoa." Taking yet another vacay day, which means I'm working from home. Except when I check my email and see that I won an iPad, at which time I run all over electronic hell-and-gone shouting that I won an iPad.

I'll shut up now.

Maybe I should buy a Lotto ticket tonight...

On the other hand, you may have used up all the Blackhawk luck . . .

Congratulations!

I don't know. The Tribune person who informed me confirmed my mailing address. If it doesn't show up for a couple of weeks, that's fine, because I do have other things I need to be working on and playing with the New Toy would have to be delayed. Honestly, I wouldn't dare unpack the thing until the middle of the month, at least.

Maybe we should call the paper and tell them not to send it until you've submitted the manuscript.

What was their name and phone number?

Don't even think about it.

I want to be able to pet the box.

I have a solution if it comes too soon. We'll drive down, carefully transport the package back to the Twin Cities*, and ensure all temptation is held at a distance until the book is done.

*It would travel in good company - Ewa would have me surround the package with more goodies from the Polish part of town. We just got back from dropping her youngest off at O'Hare with a very full trunk in the Civic.....

Congrats! I'm loving mine--I may yet buy a purse that will let me carry it around all the time, 'cause I tend to haul it around like a portfolio as it is.

Today found me running a chat client on the iPad as I was troubleshooting issues on my MacBook Pro. When there was s wait for something to install or reboot, I could check my mail, read my RSS feeds, read a book (Stanza for iPad came out today!), play one of the many wonderful games, or whatever. And it's great for travel--I'm off to Denver tomorrow, and have loaded a movie or two plus new books for the plane trip.

Do you get a 3G one, or just Wi-Fi?

Do you get a 3G one, or just Wi-Fi?

I don't know--I tried to find a blurb about it, but couldn't. I am assuming it's the entry level model, 16GB Wi-Fi. I won't know until I get it...though I suppose I could ask the PR person who emailed me that I won.

I considered 3G when I was trying to decide which model to buy, and it sounds as though they're allowing some flexibility when it comes to contracts for iPads. But 3G with a 16GB may not be worth it. 3G may not be worth it for me because, for the time being at least, I don't travel much. I also hate the idea of giving AT&T any money.

Yeah, the 'avoid feeding AT&T' thing resonates. However, I burned through the 250 MB data plan in a 3-day trip last month when my hotel didn't have WiFi in the rooms, and now am signed up for the about-to-be-extinct unlimited plan as I have travel scheduled through August. (I don't have a smart phone, so the iPad is my only means to non-WiFI Internet.) The 3G also lets me avoid the nannyware at the office if I want to read my web comics at lunch. That said, I think even the base 16 GB WiFi will be a great browser/reader/games machine, if that's what you end up with.
