Welp, after dithering for two years, I finally sprang for a Blackhawks jersey. The black 3rd jersey, customized with Toews' name/number/Captain's C. This will likely guarantee an early round playoff loss and Toews being traded. Yes, I know--it's called Slavic fatalism. Or being a recovering Cubs fan. One of the two.

And there's the problem right there:

There is no recovery from being a Cubs fan. My mother was a Cubs fan — it was the only thing about sport that she ever cared about — and discovered that early April is not too early to proclaim "Wait 'til next year!"

The Cubs have become That Guy. The one who promises to change. The one who swears that From This Moment On, he will clean up his act. He will never again be late. He will always be true. He stumbles a few times coming out of the gate, but he still promises. Lots of promises. If you had a nickel for every promise....

You can recover from being a Cubs fan. It's a twelve-step program. Twelve steps in the opposite direction, then keep going.
