And so it begins
Mar. 28th, 2010 12:07 pmToday I started seeds for May planting.
Instead of sacrificing use of the dining room table for eight weeks, this year I decided to set up the grow tray in the cellar. I may need to add a heat source of some kind in addition to the grow light because it stays sorta cool down there, but we'll see.

I've cut back the number of seeds to one per grow cell, and the number of seed trays from two to one. I won't be expanding the raised bed this year, and the six tomato plants I grew last year were way too crowded. I will start with twelve attempts, and go with the 3 or 4 strongest plants.
So. Four cells each of Pink Brandywine, Rutgers, and Cherokee Purple. Eight cells of mixed sweet peppers, because they're mixed, the seeds all look alike, and I want to increase the odds of my winding up with several different varieties. Four cells of sweet basil. I will also give mesclun and arugula a try. Because they like cooler weather, I will start them outside in a couple of weeks, after I excavate the raised bed and get rid (I hope) of all the blight-contaminated soil.
I would also like tarragon and rosemary, but I will buy those as plants.
I think I will stick with flowers for the deck planter. Nothing else did very well in there. Except the sage. I wound up with more sage than I knew what to do with.
All I can do now is hope that this summer is sunnier than last. If not, the peppers won't grow. The herbs won't do well, either.
In other news, Mud Season has reached the pellet stage. The pups no longer track in muddy prints because the mud is dry enough to stick to their paws. After they come inside, they shed pellets over the course of the day. Grind them into the rugs. I vacuumed this morning, and you wouldn't know it.
In addition to the mud room, Dream House will have a small greenhouse. And central vacuum.
