Yet another Gaby update
Feb. 24th, 2010 06:48 pmMy vet had wanted to know how Gaby was doing, so I called her around 4 and told her about the ceph refusal.
Turns out that there's a ceph depot injection that's good for 10 days--it costs more than the capsules, but one injection is all she needs. Vet had it in stock. She also wanted to check out Gaby's wound. So off we went to the hospital again.
The wound looks good. It's healing well, and looks clean. Vet changed the bandage and gave Gaby the injection. We return for follow-up on Monday.
Gaby weighs 39 pounds! She's gained about 6 pounds over the three months that she's been on the duck & sweet potato food. She's only been getting a can and a half per day, along with a few duck treats and the coat oil and the probiotic. That, and the fact that her coat has grown thicker and silkier, indicates to me that this food agrees with her system, and that she's digesting it better than she did any of the food she ate before. Her coat never felt like this when she was eating the Eagle Pack Power Formula or the Venison. It could have been whipworms--the specialist prescribed panocur when Gaby saw her in November because she felt that Heartgard didn't always take care of them and they could have been responsible for Gaby's symptoms. It could have been that her system was still torqued from whatever she was fed in her first home, and it needed the probiotic and deworming in order to settle.
I just hope that as she comes around, she regains her appetite for her canned food, because right now she doesn't want it. I'm afraid that she associates whatever digestive upset she felt yesterday with that food--in the past, whenever she became ill, she would refuse to eat whatever food she was on at the time. We'll see how the next day or two goes. If her tum gets too empty, she could start feeling nauseated, which would lead to my having to switch her to another food much more quickly than I would like. I have a case of Wellness Simple Solutions Lamb and Rice in stock just in case, but she's doing well on the duck and I would hate to have to switch.
One nice thing. I told vet about the probiotic and such, and she commended me for all I've done for Gaby. She said that she doesn't want her to gain anymore weight, but that she looks really good. I appreciated it. Now if I could just keep the little dickens from hurting herself...
