ksmith: (gimme a break)

Just returned from the vet's.

Things seemed to be going so well. Last night I fed King and Gaby, then went out to see New Moon. Came home to find Gaby had pooped in her corner. It looked fairly normal, so I was actually not upset. I figured the metro was starting to work.

Went to bed. Awoke when? 4ish? Gaby was restless, and I could hear her guts gurgle from several feet away. So. I let her out, along with King. Went into the living room to find another pile. Cleaned it up. After I let them back in, I offered them both biscuits. King took his. Gaby didn't. Oh-oh. So I gave Gaby her morning metro. She is really starting to hate getting pilled.

Back to bed. Gaby's guts still gurgling, but it seemed to get better after a while. I must have dozed. Awoke 730ish, let out the pups, and went into the living room to find that Gaby had let loose. This diarrhea was pretty much all liquid, and she managed to miss the pads with just about all of it.

If I had had carpeting in the living room, I would have had to take it up and burn it by now.

I phoned the vet's office. Saturday is their busiest day, but they wedged me in. Talked to vet about other blood tests, a more sensitive one for giardia and cryptosporidium and a GI panel that looks for enzyme issues and pancreatic disease (not pancreatitis, which would turn up on the regular blood test). We decided to try those tests. Vet goes to get things prepped, and I remain with Gaby in the exam room. She's lying next to me. Then I hear a *gurgle*, and the next thing I know there's a puddle of d-word on the floor. I hunted for something to clean it up, and Gaby kept depositing. In the exam room. In the prep area behind the exam rooms. Vet returns--I ask for help with clean-up, and she says, "Wait--I want some of that." So she's snapping on gloves and gathering bottles and sampling the mess while two techs cleaned the floor. Then they took Gaby in the back to take blood and clean her up.

Test results should be back on Monday. In the meantime, we've increased the metro dose, and added in Imodium and pepcid, At least they're small pills, but it means more pilling which means Good Times.

What could we be looking at? Could be a partial obstruction. Could be a disease she picked up from a mouse she killed. Enzyme deficiency or immunological issue of some sort. If the bloodwork comes back negative, next step could be exploratory surgery. Vet says she prefers it to endoscopy because you can actually see the organs.

The C-word was mentioned. Gaby is likely too young for cancer, but stuff happens. I tend to think it's some sort of chronic thing she was born with. Vet said it could have even developed due to poor feeding or other type of ill treatment. I can't shake the feeling that her being so underweight when I got her is a clue, but I can't get fixed on that. We need to find out what's going on.

Anyway. Came home, stopping by the drugstore on the way to pick up the OTC meds. I had thrown on whatever clothes were nearest the bed, my hair was uncombed, and I was wearing the barn coat that looks as though it had been swiped from a ragpile. I really felt like being seen in public.

All this before coffee.

Gaby seems in good spirits. She's a little low on energy, but she wants to play with King. I pilled her a half hour ago, so I'm going to try to feed her now. The hypo food, maybe with a little pumpkin, which is supposed to help in these situations. As little rabbit as possible, although I may need to give her some to get her to eat.

It's almost 11 o'clock already...

I really hope so. I had to go out, and was only gone about an hour and a half. Came home to find another d-puddle. Of course, Gaby managed to miss the pads. I had even put down extra newspaper just in case.

I know that one dose of imodium was probably not going to work miracles, but this needs to get better quick or she's going to dehydrate.
