The axolotl looks to me like the sidekick-pet space alien in an animated feature movie.

While at an event with a zoo table last year, I saw this utterly bizarre little creature that looked reptilian, but not quite. It would curl itself up into a scaly little brown ball, pillbug-like only much larger (you could imagine playing soccer with it, if you were mean) and it had these bizarre clawed toes but a fuzzy mammalian snout. I asked what it was, because I quite honestly had no idea. It was a three-banded armadillo, which isn't even all that exotic; I'd never seen an armadillo up close before. And it's absolutely a mammal, not a reptile, but damn. They are SO weird looking!
