Found an interesting item in the mail when I got home from Madison. Apparently a company I did business with experienced a "data security incident" back in February, which they learned of in March. That was how my bankcard number wound up being used to purchase clothing in the UK this weekend, when I was in Madison.

The company, Batteries.com, is providing me with a free two-year membership to a credit monitoring service. I also checked my credit reports--all are OK. I also reported the card breach to the police, and have a case number that I can provide my bank so that I can get my money back.

What joy.

Like I said, home. The pups were happy to see me, and are now exhausted. The grass sprung up about 6 inches in a week, and everything is growing in the garden.

I'm surprised your bank didn't inform you before the company did. My sister works in computer forensics at a bank dealing (in part) with this kind of fraud and usually they're told by companies immediately when data security is compromised so people's accounts are automatically monitored or even new cards issued right away - whether anyone uses your stolen number or not. At least it's sorted out though and you aren't being penalized. I had a new credit card spontaneously sent to me from my bank, with vague language as to why, and upon asking my sister she said that often happens when there is brick-and-mortar security breaches (which are in fact more pervasive than online security breaches.)

I didn't hear anything from my bank. When they locked the card last Wednesday, it was because I didn't tell them I was going to Madison.

At least the company is doing something. When it happened to us, DSW didn't even send a coupon as an apology.

I'm glad that the pups are doing well. :)

A two-year membership in the credit watchdog company is pretty decent...although it is worrying.
