Ding! Dong!
Oct. 21st, 2004 10:25 pmWireless door chimes--who knew such cause for wonder existed?
OK, maybe everyone else in the Western world. I didn't. Until today, that is, when I Googled for Doorbells (not unlike Bowled for Dollars) and came upon all these wireless models, some with very attractive control boxes.
Thus did I wind up making purchase on the Home Depot website of a light oak and satin-finish brass model. The actual doorbell is mere white plastic and, imnsho, lacking in De Stijl, but I guess it will have to do. It's better than what I have now, which is nothing. The old wired doorbell wore out years ago, and all that remains are a couple of wires sticking out of a hole in the woodframe beside my front door, and the age-yellowed plastic box in the hallway.
Light oak and satin-finish brass will look much nicer.
In other news, I'm almost finished with the online tech writing class--one more module to go, and that's all she wrote. I did learn things, so time was not wasted. Now I need to think about where to go next with this--concentrate on using the skills in the day job or nose around and see if I could try for a job or two. I might be asking for trouble since I already have a job *and* there's the small issue of a book that needs writing. We'll see.
Cleaned out gutters this evening. Oh, the glamorous life. Listened to the Astros lose to the Cards. I was pulling for the Astros to win this one, but I'd be pulling for the Red Sox in the Series, so maybe it didn't matter who won tonight.
GO SOX!!

Date: 2004-10-22 09:52 am (UTC)Down here, I can't find a tech writing job that doesn't want strong use of FrameMaker, a rather expensive word processing package used by Fortune 500 companies....
I think I get to eyeball a gutter this weekend. Oh, joy...rubber gloves time.

Date: 2004-10-22 09:56 am (UTC)Don't have wireless computer. Do have wireless phone. It's a newer phone, so I'm hoping that maybe issues cropped up with older models??

Date: 2004-10-22 10:21 am (UTC)You'd probably have been better off if the Astros had won, since, frankly, the Cards are the better team. I don't know that I'll be out of my playoff induced depression by the time the Series starts. If so, I might watch. Otherwise, I'll just watch yours and Rob's LJs. :-)

Date: 2004-10-22 10:40 am (UTC)*sigh* Which means I should save all the packing materials and not attache the main box to the wall until I make sure there's no interference. Or go back to a corded phone, which frankly has better sound quality..

They definitely have the bats. Edmonds is amazing. But I'm hoping that in the end Destiny will trump Depth.

Edmonds is no slouch out in the field, either. I think the Sox are going to be in for a wild ride.

Date: 2004-10-22 06:17 pm (UTC)Wireless SNAFUs
Date: 2004-10-23 01:39 pm (UTC)It's a Uniden 2.4 GHz with two handsets and a second plug-in for another room. It used to throw the LinkSYS offline when I'd walk back to the computer, and the doorbell (second ring) did not seem to work reliably around it.
We changed the wireless card, and I think things are better, but I haven't got enough data yet. So how these things interact can be weird--the phone goes nuts if the microwave is working, for example.
