Off and on for the past few months, the same man has been showing up in my dreams. I don't recognize him. He's tall with dark hair, and dressed in a dark navy business suit. White shirt. A tie, but I don't recall any pattern or color. He's well-built, attractive but not drop-dead.

First time he turned up was in a work dream. I was in my cube, when he stopped by and asked about someone else I worked with. I had the impression that he was there for an interview. We started talking, and he wasn't leaving. Add in the usual undercurrent that something is going on, and it may not be too bad.

I seem to recall him a couple of times since. Nothing definite, because with few exceptions I stink at recalling the actual plot of my dreams.

Last night's dream was one of the whacked ones, with chases and hurried trips to strange houses in the middle of the night. Meetings in clubs, during the day or after hours. Grimy places. Sometime toward the end of the dream, I see my friend again. He's still dressed in a suit. Open-faced. Friendly. And a demon. I learned last night that he's a demon.

If so, it's certainly taking its time working itself out.

I recall a vague undercurrent of threat, but I don't recall being afraid.

But I've had dreams in the past where I know I am being chased by a vampire and they are going to kill me and even then I wasn't scared. Clinical detachment.

Clinical detachment because you're the creator: you're not really the POV character in the plot dream--you're still on the outside.

Mileage may vary.

It's strange. Being there, yet not being there. And not in control, which really is the essence of my plotting ability or lack thereof. Those 6am backbrain downloads. The details working themselves out elsewhere.

Very interesting. I find I have the weirdest dreams if I wake up very early and then go back to sleep. Those "second round" dreams are very vivid and detailed.

I almost always awaken around 2am, then fall back asleep. Maybe that's a contributing factor.
