Love weekdays at home. Love 'em.

Busy. Thought I would take the lawnmower in for preventive maintenance, so I got it into the back of Kuro with help of a two-board ramp, then dismantled the handle/whatever you call it so that I could push it in farther. I had to leave the hatchback door open, and had visions of my tapping the brake and watching Mower shoot out the gap, but we made it to the repair guy intact only to find that he had a 2.5 week backlog. Since the thing is running and I just need PM, he suggested I bring it back in July. His is a one-man shop, and he looked a little worn out.

So, carted Ferdinand the Toro back home, reassembled the handle and rolled it out. Then it was out again to hardware store and grocery store. Bought a couple of 14" coconut mat-lined hanging baskets, a post hanger thingie to hang the baskets from, herb plants (sweet basil, cilantro, sage, and dill) and two tomato plants, a Roma and a Sweet 100, which is a cherry variety. In case all the seeds crash, at least I will have something to pick in a few months. These tomato plants are 8-12" tall, and each have a couple of flowers. They dwarf the Black Crimson.

Brought some roses at the grocery store because, well, Mothers Day. Happy Mothers Day, Mom.

Came home. First I planted the tomatoes, sacrificing the weaker of the two cantaloupe sprouts in the process. I buried it deep in the dirt, so I wouldn't see it anymore. I hate culling seedlings. I feel like a murderer.

Then it was on to the strawberries and the herbs. The hanging basket for the berries was a little smaller than recommended, but I stuck the plants in the sides and the top. Then I planted the herbs in the other basket--they're a little crowded. Hoping they will grow ok.

Dinner was seven-grain pilaf with tomatoes and balsamic vinaigrette dressing, broiled salmon, and a sliced pear on the side. Then came a little chocolate lava cake which was very rich. Too rich. Need to go easy on those.

Could rain tonight. Like we need it.

I need to mow this weekend--my yard looks like a jungle, but I'm going to have to get the blade sharpened first. By the end of the year last year I was just kind of making the grass lay down.

Mine cuts ok, but not so hot with the mulching.

Of course, I tend to let the grass get too long. Can't lop off too much if you want the mulching action to work.

I'm still amazed that the mower started on the first pull after having sat for about 8 months. It sputtered a bit--I don't think I added enough gas treatment--but it kicked along.
