Hosta are toxic to dogs. They contain saponins, which can cause varying degrees of GI upset depending on how much the dog has ingested. Vomiting, diarrhea, depression may occur, but in most cases the dog will recover on its own. Withhold food and water for several hours and monitor the situation. Some vomiting may occur--if it continues, the dog may need to be taken to the clinic for treatment for nausea and dehydration.

This PSA brought to you by Saturday night, life with dogs, and the letter G.

UPDATE: According to the ASPCA Poison Center, hosta are toxic. Yet I am finding websites stating that they are good additions to a dog-safe garden. I'm going to go with the info from the ASPCA, of course, but I am hoping that the difference of opinion indicates that there is some safety margin here.

The patient was pacing and licking her lips for a little while. Playing with King. She's sleeping at my feet now.

I should be writing, but that isn't going too well. I don't even care that the Bulls lost.

She's attracted to bundled/chewy greenery. She chewed up one of the indoor palm trees--chewed up the leaves and down to the trunk. The hosta would have been lovely, a mass of tightly furled leaves. I was so angry when I saw what she had done, but I didn't think anything of it at the time because she seemed to have left the masticated greenery behind. It wasn't until a couple of hours ago, when she went outside and started eating a lot of grass, that it hit me that there might be a problem.

Looks like I may be moving some hosta tomorrow. I have a good place for them, but I did have other things to do...

"...but I did have other things to do" seems to be the mantra for any of us with critters.

I assembled the raised bed today, and even got the kennel fencing set up around it. Filled the thing with special veggie/flower soil, but I need to cut the stuff with topsoil, which I figured I would pick up tomorrow. I also have some grocery shopping to do.

It shouldn't take much to dig up the hosta. If time gets short, I'll shovel them into buckets.

I need four-day weekends.
