The Reader's Digest used to operate a student travel program called the Foreign Study League. I took the trip they offered in 1973--one of the cities on the itinerary was Paris.

At the time, my late uncle Roland was a captain for TWA. Both prior to and during WWII, iirc, he flew Over the Hump--the China/Burma/Tibet theater. I don't know if he flew with Chennault. I'm not sure exactly what he did. But he was a vet and that entitled him to bring guests to American Legion posts. He was going to be in Paris at the same time I was, so he met me for lunch, and took me to Post #1.

I don't recall much about the place, except it was an old building on a typical Paris sidestreet. Dark, staffed by elderly folk. For dessert, I had chocolate mousse served in a supermarket peel-off-the-lid-and-eat cup. But the gentleman who signed us in seemed quite taken by the fact that my uncle had flown Over the Hump. He said he didn't meet many who had done that.

Most who jumped the hump before the war didn't survive, at least that's what my dad used to say. He served below, mostly Celon and Burma, with the OSS. These memories of them are pretty special, eh? I really like that your mousse was puddin'pop packaged even 30 years ago. Not refrigerated either, I'll wager!
