Taking tomorrow off because the weather is going to be marvelous and I have a great deal of yardwork to do. I want to take down King's kennel and reassemble it at the spot where I will put the raised garden bed. Here's hoping that will provide enough protection from predation and curious puppies.

I also wanted to assemble the raised bed itself--the kit had arrived a month ago, but I hadn't bothered to open it until this afternoon. Well, she said, there were problems. The carton was pretty beaten up, with tears along the sides and badly-taped ends. I opened it to find the instruction sheet pretty much destroyed. The list of contents was readable, and after reading it I realized that a number of parts were missing.

So, I phoned the vendor's customer service. After the agent realized how many parts were actually missing, she said that she would arrange to 1) have FedEx pick up the incomplete kit on Monday and 2) ship out a replacement, which I should have in a week. If/when it all shakes out, I will post the company's name and praise them to the skies. Fingers crossed it all goes as smoothly as it seems it might.

I still have lots to do. If I get the kennel moved, level that portion of the yard, pick up branches and rake stray leaves, I will have done well.

I do wonder about packaging. This raised bed consists of a number of parts, plastic boards and dowels and corner joints, and everything is packed in a thin cardboard carton with no spare space and no cushioning whatsoever. Contrast this with the way they package, say, a pair of earrings--layers of cotton and boxes within boxes and bubble wrap.

In other news, why do some folks think that lovely Spring days are a perfect time for them to burn yard waste in such a way that the smoke is still hanging in the air and seeping into homes well into the evening hours? At times like this, I wish I had a fan contraption that I could set up so that it blew smoky air back into their bedroom for the rest of the night.
