A Finnish computer programmer who lost one of his fingers in a motorcycle accident has made himself a prosthetic replacement with a USB drive attached.

Mr Jalava says he is already thinking about upgrading the finger to include more storage and wireless technology.

"I'm planning to use another prosthetic as a shell for the next version, which will have removable fingertip and RFID tag," he wrote on his blog, ProtoBlogr.net.

Well, he did lose his in an accident.

I can see implants in the near future--likely nearer than we think. Something simple, that will make taking notes via keyboard or hand obsolete. And it will snowball from there. This post in Tobias Buckell's blog, and especially the short film embedded therein--just spooky.

Cochlear implants are already here and have been for years. There's a fascinating book (that I can't find today, of course!) by a man who had one and thought seriously about how the human/machine interface changed things. Cochlear implants aren't just implanted hearing aids--they're a direct connection that involves teaching both brain and implant to work together. Weird indeed.
