According to the FedEx site, my iMac was delivered this morning. Originated in Shanghai, and traveled through Subic Bay, Anchorage, and on to my humble abode.

I also found out that Mac2Mac, the PC-to-Mac data transfer system, comes in a parallel:USB version that works with Win95/PCs w/o a USB port. I had been under the impression that it only came in a USB:USB version that needed Win98 or above.

I was concerned about data transfer, and planned to back up the PC on both Zip and CD and transfer data as needed. Now it appears as though there is an easier way. Yay.

Well, mostly writing. Probably pretty much the same amount of surfing as I do now.

To tell the truth, the thing I am most excited about is the space that will be freed up on and around my desk after I switch out the Gateway for the iMac. No more monster tower taking up half the space under my desk. Cordage should be cut in half at the very least, as I will be getting rid of the monitor cords, the speaker cords, and one of the printer cords. I'm getting the wireless mouse/keyboard option, which means I'll be getting rid of those cords, too. One printer out--I love that little HP 1100, but it can't be made Mac-compatible.

Fingers crossed that the Mac2Mac data transfer goes well, which means that the old Gateway can be shipped off for salvage somewhere. I need to check the Office Max/Office Depot sites--one of them was accepting old computer equipment for recycling, but I think the program was only going to last until Labor Day.

Enjoy your new friend! I keep meaning to take the time to upgrade my iMac to OSX, but never seem to get around to it. I'd love to get a wireless mouse and keyboard, though. Either that or get another USB port or two.

I should probably upgrade my iBook's version of OSX, but downloading 85+ MBs over a 56K modem would take hours and I'm not sure it's worth it. I'm guessing that the latest version of OSX will be loaded onto the iMac.

I'm hoping the wireless keyboard makes up for the fact that I will lose the use of my ergo keyboard. At least I will be able to kick back with the keyboard in my lap, which helps out the shoulders almost as much as the split keyboard.

No place to go where you could download at a higher rate?

What version do you need? I've got a blank cd or two floating around at home. I could probably manage to download and burn it for you across the T-10 here at work. Might be a while before I get to it since they're displacing us for a week or so and my stuff's in boxes.

Yeah, I haven't been a Mac fan in the past, but with OS X and the coolness of the G5, even I am tempted to get one when I need to get a new computer. Unfortunately, I've discovered that right now, I do not really need a new computer, even though I lust after the flat screens and all the bells/whistles of the new computers.

Cordless is good, especially for the keyboard mouse, man, those things get tangled a lot!

I can't say that I absolutely *needed* a new desktop. But I fell like a tree for the G5, and I like the idea of no longer being of interest to the vast majority of virus writers.
