Saturday night at the movies

You know, Van Helsing is really bad.

[identity profile] galeni.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
But amusing, yes? It's one of my favorite Bad Movies.

[identity profile] kristine-smith.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
It is a mess.

How does Kate Beckinsale breathe in that corset?

[identity profile] jessica-de-milo.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
She's terribly talented. Maybe not as an actress, but talented nonetheless.

[identity profile] kristine-smith.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
She's an Oscar-winner compared to those three brides. Damn.

[identity profile] windrose.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
Breathe, hell. I want to know how she moved.

[identity profile] elmunadi.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
Given some of what she wore and moved in in Underworld, I'd hazard she's got ample skills to handle corsets.

In regards the movie... Someone called it the VVild VVild VVerst - It did feel rather like Artemus Gordon should be showing up in the next scene.

One of the most disappointing films that I ever seen. It should have been fun. I like the Mummy films, the Universal Horror films, Hugh Jackman, and Kate Beckinsale. Those elements should add up to a good popcorn flick. Nope. It's just tedious.

[identity profile] kristine-smith.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
There's just too much. Kitchen sink plot, and messy CGI. I caught that they were paying tribute to a bunch of monster movies, but they didn't have to try to pay tribute to every. Damned. One.

I'm watching it to the end. I saw the end before, and boy, is it hokey. I mean, who writes this stuff? Even bigger question--who in hell decides it's worth the $$$ to film it?

[identity profile] mizkit.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 11:13 am (UTC)(link)
I haaaaaaaaaaaate the end of that movie. I hate all the endings of it. I hate the stupid howl, I hate the transformation back to a human and despite the fact that I understand the homage of having him, you know, almost fucking poor dead Kate, I find it *offensive*. And then the actual ending with the unbelieveably corny stupid lame dumb-ass faces in the sky, *agh*. Agh agh AGH. Such an incredibly, incredibly bad movie. And it could have been so *fun*.

I kind of suspect that the original script out there was not as bad as the end mess that hit the theatres. That happens a lot. The Catwoman film--which was also painfully bad--was rewritten about eight times, several of which were during filming. So what happens is there are a handful of moments in the movie where you can see what must have been elements of the original plot, and actually, it doesn't look *bad*. Certainly not in comparison to the train wreck that made it to the theatres. I think Van Helsing's got some of that too.

Oh, hey! Now you spoiled it for me!

*g,d,r*

[identity profile] mizkit.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
*chases* :)

[identity profile] kristine-smith.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I just took a good look at your icon--is that from X-Men 3? I watched that yesterday. Not as big of a mess, but lacking, imho. Although I will say that watching Sir Ian McKellan running around in that Magneto costume is kinda special.

[identity profile] mizkit.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's from X3, which was a travesty of a different sort from Van Helsing. X2 set X3 up SO VERY WELL, and then, well. Brett Ratner ruined it.

The repeating crossbow was pretty cool, but other than that, meh.

[identity profile] kristine-smith.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
At least I saw it for free. Well, the cost of the cable sub, but still.

[identity profile] galeni.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 07:15 am (UTC)(link)
I liked Alan/Faramir and that they cgi'd pants onto Jackman as he carries her body because he was Too Distracting. Good film to watch while filing paperwork.

[identity profile] kristine-smith.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought Alan looked familiar.

Watching the movie on the small screen didn't help. I could barely pick out the details of the cavern where Drac's children were holed up, or any of the other CGI scenes. Too much darkness and smoky detailing.

[identity profile] galeni.livejournal.com 2009-01-26 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
True. I saw it at the theatre on a huge screen. Hugh Jackman and Faramir were a draw I couldn't resist.

[identity profile] scbutler.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Really, really bad.

[identity profile] douglascohen.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
That's practically a compliment.

[identity profile] barbarienne.livejournal.com 2009-01-26 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
It's been Bad Movie Day on that channel. Van Helsing, X3, and Superman Returns. A triumvirate of "movies that could have been good."

It really does prove that spectacular fight scenes and award-winning actors cannot save a badly directed film with a terminally mangled script.

[identity profile] kristine-smith.livejournal.com 2009-01-26 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Spectacle has never made a bad script go away. When are they going to learn?
