They waited until after Hallowe’en? What astonishing restraint! I was horrified one time when I wandered into a Bed, Bath, and Beyond in July and they had a twitching Santa-zombie on display...
The local mall put out Christmas goods for sale before Columbus Day. And my favorite grocery store not only had Christmas display items (trees, lights, cards, etc) up since early October, but by noon on October 31st they had completely torn down the Halloween candy section and were replacing it with Christmas candy.
We've had commercials for layaway at K-Mart for at least two weeks now. This is especially annoying as you know everything will be much cheaper after Thanksgiving and even more so as it gets closer to Xmas.
I feel especially offended by Christmas creep because my birthday is Nov. 30th, and I really want to celebrate it before thinking about Christmas.
Weeks ago I saw a Christmas merchandise for sale at Lowe's. Over the weekend Borders was playing religious Christmas carols before it got dark out, though that switched over at some point to secular musics.
A friend who used to work in the administrative offices for one of the big box warehouse-type high volume sales to individuals, families, and small businesses chains, said that Halloween, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas are all too close for efficient high volume merchandise selling, and that the profit from Thanksgiving Day stuff had been dropping--so, the consumer goods business decided to focus on Halloween and Christmas and promote them more, and mostly ignore Thanksgiving Day....
