It was a good thing that I took Gaby in when I did.



Yes, she did have cystic ovaries--she was just completing the second heat cycle that she had experienced in the two months I've had her, and was getting ready to start the third. According to the vet, there is no best time to spay a dog with this condition. They're always going to be on either the upswing or the downswing.

One of Gaby's ovaries was three times the size of the other, and her uterus was inflamed. Her metabolism is always in overdrive--I feed her 1.5 to 2 times what I should be feeding her according to the weights/amounts on the Eagle Pack bag, and while she has gained 4 pounds and looks good, she is always starved. She may slow down a little thanks to the operation, but it will be gradual. I hope it takes the edge off her appetite. I will have to watch her so that she doesn't gain too much weight.

In other news, the vet is pretty sure Gaby has at least a little Husky. Huskies apparently whine and wail more than any other breed when they come out of anesthesia, and Gaby sounded just like one.

We'll know for 99.9% sure in a few weeks. I sent for a DNA test kit from Wisdom Panel, and hope to receive it by the end of the week. Vet will draw Gaby's blood, we'll send the sample to the lab, and see what shakes out.

Yeah--my concern would have been some sort of uterine infection--one of the vets did check for that when I took Gaby in for the initial exam three weeks ago. I'm guessing the discharge would have been different, along with other signs. But, all a non-issue from now on, for which we're all glad.

Uterine infections are bad. I keep running into the word "sepsis".

I'm bringing her home on Friday. It's possible I may have the kit by then, as I received the shipment notification yesterday, which was the day I bought it. But even if I don't have it, I am assuming I will need to take Gaby in next week to have stitches removed, or at least for a follow-up visit. I don't know whether the tube for the kit is different than a regular blood draw tube--% heparin to prevent clotting, presence of anything that can interfere with a DNA test--so I'm reluctant to draw ahead of time.

I've seen too many "crime investigation" shows where any blood fragment less than 1000 years old yields the needed information. Just wanted to save Gaby (and you) another stressful trip and needle-stick.

Gaby does not like to ride in the car--I have to lift her to put her in because she won't jump in. Once she's in, she's fine--she stretches out on the seat, no pacing or panting. Mickey used to get waay more stressed. King doesn't stress until we get in the vet's office, at which point he wants Out. Now.
