Thanks to everyone who commented about laptops vs desktops. I'm still on the fence. There is at least one company out there that makes docking stations for Mac laptops (right here in northeastern Illinois!), so that option is on the table. I like the idea of being able to attach a regular size monitor and keyboard. But. I have also heard of docking stations failing over time because of the constant plugging/unplugging. OTOH, these are Dell docking stations I'm talking about, which are the ones we use at the day job.

The main reason to go with a desktop is the one some of you mentioned--use as a primary music storage/system server/sun around which all laptops revolve like satellites. OK, maybe that was a little over the top. But that's how I've used my desktop as well, so, yes I can see the advantages.

One issue--I *liked* the old iMac white cases. I don't like the pale gold MacBook Pros--they look like make-up cases on steroids, a little chintzy looking, and yes, this is my opinion only. Not crazy about the brushed aluminum iMac cases, either, but I prefer those to the MBPros. Not that the MBPro option is on the table. There is a limit to how much I will pay for a laptop. I just don't care for the latest Apple stylings, and will wait to see what the new model iMacs look like before making a decision.

Here's an interesting article about cheaper macbooks on the near horizon: http://bigtech.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2008/10/14/will-steve-jobs-outrun-a-bear/

Potentially they may have a better look too. I just bought one, and I got a hardshell case that's purple to snap on it, so I like that. I know, I'm shallow. Anyhow, cheaper would have been nicer, but I figure since I'll keep it for at least 5 years, it's an okay investment for now. I keep a desktop and laptop, partly because I like to have a natural keyboard for when I do long stretches of writing.

Oh, I'm completely shallow. One reason I stick with Macs is the appearance.

I went with it because I'd avoided on the basis of the learning curve, but with vista being so difficult, I figured the learning curve would be about the same. And the purple case is Preeeeeeettttttyyyyy. I don't know why PC companies don't have more of them. It just snaps on and becomes the outer shell of the computer. I mean . . . seems obvious.

In case you haven't seen it, Apple announced their new laptops today. Something more to think about.

I checked out the film on the Apple site. The new MacBook is really sharp-looking.

I want to see what the new iMacs look like when they come out in early 2009 (at least, that's the rumor). I already bought one MacBook this year. Two systems in one year is a bit much.
