Watching Letterman. McCain blew him off this evening. OMG, is he pissed.

"Are we suspending it (the campaign) because of the economy, or because the poll numbers are sliding?"

I think the Republicans are going to go down pretty hard, if this is the best they have to offer at a time like this.

I'm pretty amused by Obama's reaction to the question of suspending the campaign: A president should be able to do more than one thing at a time.

Letterman kept saying that McCain shouldn't have had to suspend the campaign--he should've sent his veep candidate to campaign in his stead.

It didn't help that McCain was still in NYC giving interviews, instead of traveling to Washington as he told Letterman he'd be doing. They showed a clip of his interview with Katie Couric, and Letterman shouted out, "Hey Senator, I have a question--do you need a ride to the airport?"

Incidentally, according to the latest poll numbers here, McCain is getting hammered by 13 points. I think the economic issue is going to be his undoing (and well, Palin). Someone on NPR this morning said something rather smart: that he's trying all these refocusing measures because he doesn't want the economic issue to linger into October where it will continue to drag him down.

I just don't think $700 billion in free money is going to help quickly enough to make that a reality for him.

McCain is also trying to blow off the debate tomorrow night. I guess to at least have a semblance of consistency, he had to blow off Letterman, too.

"I can't go to the debate."
"But you had time for Letterman?"

(This is not, by the way, an apologia for McCain, who I fervently hope gets trounced on 11/4. I think he should get his ass to both Letterman and the debate.)

According to what I read, McCain blew off Letterman to be interviewed by Katie Couric, the reason being that Palin did such a lousy job on that one (too) that he had to step in and apply lots of spackle.

As did his make-up artist.

Now the question making the rounds is whether the folks who made fun of John Edwards for his $400 haircut are also going to call McCain on his $5500+ make-up jobs. But they didn't call him on his $500 shoes, so, maybe not.

There is also genuine concern as to whether McCain is exhausted, ill, or a little of both, and is covering up.

Oh, god, did you see the Palin interview? Painful. I watched it a second time, trying to imagine her behind a podium at the White House...and I just got twitchy.
