My G5 iMac has been crashing over the last few weeks--according to the error report, it's a kernel panic issue. I called Apple Tech Support, and the tech suggested I run the hardware test.

I planned to do that today, but--where is the thing located? According to the manual, the test program is located on Install DVD #1. I inserted that DVD, followed the instructions, invoked the Start-Up Manager, and waited for the thing to search for and find the Hardware Test. The only volumes that appear are the HD and the installation DVD. No hardware test. Am I looking on the right disc? Am I doing something wrong?

The hardware test program is an application located on the installation volume, no? Did you poke around the contents of that volume?

No, because according to the manual, I was supposed to get an icon for the hardware program itself--I wasn't supposed to have to poke around. I was concerned that if I initiated the install, I'd have no choice but to keep going, which would mean, I assume, that I would have to reinstall Leopard.

I don't remember seeing a utilities directory on the leopard disk, but I did *something* after doing the install, that required inserting the disk. There is a bail out point so you don't have to do a full install.

Back everything up just in case. I only did this once, and my memory isn't what it used to be.

I'll take a peek when I get home. I've done this but not for ages. And a backup is always a good idea anways.
